During a recent concert in Paris, Hélène Grimaud performed this beautiful music by Maurice Ravel (piano concerto in G major). The second movement, Adagio Assai, is fragile, vulnerable, it creates/follows a “Mozart-like line,” so frail, it could easily be lost, broken.
And yet, Hélène Grimaud, in the midst of coughing and cell phones ringing. managed to create an amazing moment, touching deeply those who paid attention to her immense talent and sensitivity.
For years, I have wanted to listen to this Adagio with my eyes, the right version only had to appear, and it just did.
This is the one.
The text appearing in French at the beginning of the video is from Marcel Proust’s “Jean Santeuil" which, roughly translated, says:
“At that very spot on the canvas, one must not paint what one sees because one sees nothing, nor paint what one does not see because one must paint only what one sees, but one must paint that one does not see, that the inability of the eye to sail on/penetrate the mist be inflicted upon it on the canvas as it is on the river…"
