The Visual Music Village

for Visual Music Artists, Writers, and Venues

At the end of 2008, I was looking for a version of Arcangelo Corelli’s Follia to listen to with my eyes.
I heard a large number of versions, many beautiful ones, some by very famous musicians (rightly so), but the one version that really grabbed my attention was by an ensemble I had never heard of, “Quadro Janas”.
I found them through an amazing Dutch website dedicated to as many versions of folias as one can find: http://www.folias.nl
Through that site, I found the contact information with which to connect with “Quadro Janas”, and that is how I first met Paola Erdas who, immediately, became (and has remained) an essential friend and "my goddess of the harpsichord” (http://www.paolaerdas.it).
Andrea Lausi kindly sent the high quality recording of Quadro Janas’ Folia (done during their very first live concert in Sardinia) and as the saying goes, the rest is history (as in: https://vimeo.com/showcase/2985377).
However, in those days, I did not have the computer power to work at very high resolutions, the original Folia was done at 1024x576, but recently, Topaz Labs released “Video Enhance AI” (https://topazlabs.com/video-enhance-ai/), an application that can enlarge videos with surprisingly good results, using artificial intelligence.
I processed the original”La Folia” video from 1024x576 to 2048x1152, with very encouraging results, but the file is too large to post as is on my "Vimeo Plus” account (limited to a maximum of 5 GB per file and/or per week).
So I reduced it to 1080p (1920x1080), here’s what that looks like now (original was done in December 2008).

As is so often the case with my work, give it time to establish itself and hopefully, you will enjoy it (in any case, the music is sublime, the musicians are exceptional).
For what it's worth, this piece is a turning point in my work, in my life.

————————————

Organic abstract images dance to/with Baroque music (Arcangelo Corelli's "Variations on La Follia," magnificently transcribed and interpreted by Quadro Janas).
The music was recorded live, in Sardinia, during Quadro Janas' first public concert.
The musicians are: Paola Erdas (harpsichord), Lorenzo Cavasanti and Dorothee Oberlinger (recorders) and Jorge Alberto Guerrero (cello).

This remarkable version was found on an amazing web site solely dedicated to "La Folia": http://www.folias.nl/

I listened there and elsewhere to many (many!) versions, some very well known, Quadro Janas' was without a doubt the one that spoke to me the most.

I then contacted Paola Erdas (http://www.paolaerdas.it) who kindly embarked with me in this adventure (with much help from Andrea Lausi).

Paola and I have made several other films together since, many availabe here on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/album/2985377), this one has remained as a genuine highlight in my life.

We hope some day to do a live images - music concert together, and that day may just be around the corner…

Update: that concert finally took place, in Trieste, in December 2018: https://vimeo.com/311672590

Here's an album of stills pulled from "La Folia" http://www.tinyurl.com/y8xntyvj
