The Visual Music Village

for Visual Music Artists, Writers, and Venues

A few years ago, composer Mikel Kuehn (http://mikelkuehn.com/) and I agreed to create a piece together, and the way to approach that was for me to first create a silent film for/to which Mikel would compose the music.
More info about that here http://www.mikelkuehn.com/index.php/misc/85-misc/153
As is often the case with the way I work, I created that silent film by using music as a temporary temporal structure, this time making a collage of some of Goran Bregoviċ's film music, taken from his Ederlezi album (I most sincerely apologize to him for my mangling his remarkable music).
Once done, the piece was stripped of its temporary music and sent to Mikel, who never heard the "original" soundtrack.
He will now if he views this Vimeo page.
I had made that music collage with the intention to create a life in 5 parts, the 5th one being akin to the recollection of one's life supposedly happening at the time of death.
Mikel then composed and recorded the music (with the participation of soprano Deborah Norin-Kuehn), eventually suggesting a few changes, as per the addition of an additional "black" movement, bringing the total to 6.
The piece Mikel and I eventually ended up with is also on Vimeo, http://vimeo.com/18551194 and is being regularly selected by music festivals (as for example SEAMUS 2012 and ICMC 2012)
For those interested, viewing the original sketch and the final movie will show some aspects of my work processes.
I had not seen the original sketch in quite some time and found the impact of the music collage quite strong, working with the images in a way that made me think I may ask for this piece to be screened at my funeral, even if, for the longest time, I took for granted that the Arietta of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, opus 111, as performed by Vladimir Feltsman, would be it (available here http://vimeo.com/34435386).
Given my age and health, it should not be too long before I find out which piece will "win," that is, if I am "lucky.""
