Präludium from Jean Detheux on Vimeo.
When I saw the video of the concert Marco Ambrosini (nyckelharpa) presented with Caterina Other (nyckelharpa) and Frieder Zimmermann (guitar), I immediately knew I wanted to listen to its music with my eyes.
The beautiful energy of that performance reached out to me, it seems to me a live concert often offers that kind of energy while the more “perfect” studio recording can at times lack it.
I contacted Marco, Caterina and Frieder, and was not only given the recording of the “Canon Inverso” (that original video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLyorbzPnZAeTJb07djsr1i1WDXrzS5VDa&v=8FBLVWky8So, my rendition of it is here: https://vimeo.com/208551395), I was also kindly offered the “Präludium” (that original video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBEIXhMbMcY&index=3&list=PLyorbzPnZAeTJb07djsr1i1WDXrzS5VDa)
This is yet one more example of musicians who take historically significant music and perform it with a “modern” twist, yet do so with total respect for the original.
With Marco and SUPERSONUS, The European Resonance Ensemble, we already had explored that a while ago (a gorgeous Biber): https://vimeo.com/107930894
Once again, I am not at all trying to illustrate the music, I bring the music and many sequences into my editing application (Final Cut Pro X) and start “playing" with them until “something” feels right.
I have long ago given up on working with/from an idea or concept, I’d rather enter a dialogue with music which is like a child discovering a new territory rather than that of a mason building a brick-wall following a architect’s blueprint.
I spent 2 years working with/on the full “Musical Offering,” the first instalment is here and provides links to all of them: https://vimeo.com/album/3357963/video/125240593

Thank you
