Je devais avoir 14 ou 15 ans quand j'ai vu “Orfeu Negro” (probablement en 1960).
Ce film a alors changé ma façon de voir la vie.
L’amour et la tragédie, le tout d’un seul tenant, et avec une musique magnifique comme je n’en avais jamais entendu auparavant.
Ce film, ses personnages, son histoire et sa musique, sont restés bien présents en moi pendant toutes ces années.
Quand j’ai entendu l’improvisation de Masabumi Kikuchi sur un des thèmes principaux d’Orfeu Negro ("Manhã de Carnaval“ allmusic.com/album/black-orpheus-mw0002928244), cette musique m'a touché aussi profondément que le film l’avait fait lors de mon premier visionnement.
J’ai immédiatement su que je devais écouter cette musique avec mes yeux.
Voici donc le résultat de ce dialogue entre l’extraordinaire improvisation de Masabumi et mes pauvres images.
Cette improvisation est comme une classe de maître sur le “moins c'est plus”, pendant le travail, ma respiration a beaucoup changé, elle diminuait au fur et à mesure que j’avançais, mais ce n’était pas une contrainte, au contraire, c’était très proche d'une méditation profonde (comme le zazen pour ceux qui connaissent cette pratique).

J'ai rarement vécu cela pendant le travail, et j’espère sincèrement que cette expérience sera possible pour ceux qui vont visionner ce sketch au complet.

When I was 15 or 16 (around 1960), I saw the movie “Orfeu Negro” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbcxQRuOa4o), and that brought me into another way of looking at life.
Love and tragedy, all in one thread, and with magnificent music the likes of which I had never heard before.
That movie, its characters, plot and music, have stayed with me during all these years (60+).
So when I heard Masabumi Kikuchi’s improvisation on one of the main themes of Orfeu Negro ("Manhã de Carnaval“ https://www.allmusic.com/album/black-orpheus-mw0002928244), it had an impact on me not unlike what I experienced when seeing the movie for the first time so many years ago.
I instantly knew I had to work with/for/to it.
So here is what came out of that dialogue between Masabumi’s masterful improvisation and my meagre images, Masabumi Kikuchi’s improvisation was like a master-class in "less is more”, my breathing throughout the work was brought to a near standstill, but not anywhere near chocking, no, it was much more akin to a deep meditation (deep zazen for those who are familiar with that practice).
It was truly mesmerizing, and I sincerely hope this movie will have some of that effect on you.
