for Britlin from Jean Detheux on Vimeo.
Many years ago, I saw a video on YouTube which touched me deeply.
It was a message to Eric Whitacre from Britlin Losee, singing the soprano part of his “Sleep” composition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xGBWhWgydw
This video has stayed with me all these years.
Britlin looked a lot like my own daughter, I could feel her shyness and her courage, she must have worked hard on herself to dare record and share that video.
And I am immensely grateful to her for having done that.
That video had an immense impact on what has happened since, Eric Whitacre has acknowledged that in this video: https://www.ted.com/talks/eric_whitacre_a_virtual_choir_2_000_voices_strong?language=en
I have thought many times of doing an hommage to Britlin, and it is only when my favourite voice ensemble recorded the very piece Britlin made me aware of that I decided to do a sketch in her honour (a “sketch” because I do not have the rights to the use of that music).
So this is a double-whammy, a tribute to Britlin, of course, as well as a tribute to the magnificent VOCES8: https://voces8.com
