Seeing Sound - UPDATE

practice-led research symposium, 19th/20th September 2009

Bath Spa University (UK) will host an informal two-day symposium exploring a broad range of multimedia work highlighting the relationship between sound and image. Areas such as visual music, abstract cinema, experimental animation, lumia, cymatics, live audiovisual performance and relevant installation work will be examined and explored.

The event is planned as an informal networking event, with the primary purpose of fostering a visual music community in the UK and beyond. It will feature paper and poster sessions, live performances and film/video screenings and will take place at the University's beautiful Georgian parkland campus in Bath.

We are currently inviting applications to attend the event - attendance will be free of charge*, but places are strictly limited. A finalized programme will be publicised very soon, but here are some salient points:

The event will run 12:30 - 6:00 on Saturday 19th and 11:00 - 4:00 on Sunday 20th, with an additional live performance at 7:30 pm on the Saturday (times subject to minor revisions). Lunch and refreshments will be included.

Our provisional programme includes presentations and performances from, amongst others (and in no particular order):

Jaroslaw Kapuscinski - Stanford University
Sandra Naumann - Ludwig Boltzmann Institute, Linz
Diego Garro - University of Keele
Rajmil Fischman - University of Keele
Steve Bird - University of Keele
Andy Willy - University of Keele
Joseph Harrison - University of Keele
David Reid - Nottingham Trent University
Tim Howle - University of Hull
Bret Battey - DeMontfort University
Mick Grierson - Goldsmiths College
Jon Pigott - University of Wales Institute, Cardiff
Ilias Bergstrom - University College London
Andy Keep - Bath Spa University
Jan Meinema - Bath Spa University
Joseph Hyde - Bath Spa University

The event will also include extensive screenings of visual music works, many of which are rarely shown. We will be featuring 16mm programmes of Oskar Fischinger and Mary Ellen Bute (early visual music) works courtesy of the Center for Visual Music, and will also be screeing Nam June Paik's Global Groove courtesy of Electronic Arts Intermix. In addition we will be including many visual music and related works by contemporary artists.

A finalized programme will be available in the next few days.

Reservations can be made in the first instance by contacting Joseph Hyde - j.hyde@bathspa.ac.uk

* a voluntary contribution of £20/£10 concessions will be invited to help us cover catering costs only.
