Ways of Hearing: An Audio-Visual Amalgamation

The pieces in Ways of Hearing will create a dialog between sound and vision, principally addressing the nature, forms, and mechanisms of sound-reproduction technologies. The show focuses on sound in an age in which there exists much theoretical discourse associated with visual culture and history, but in which there is a far less cohesive study of sound history and culture. While most audiences are acutely critical of the ways visual information is mediated, they may be less so in terms of sound. By examining this disparity in sensory experience, Ways of Hearing investigates the constructed nature of experience with each sense and the way we regard them. Additionally, the show explores the hybrid forms possible when merging two often-distinct branches of art practice: sound arts and visual arts. Collaborations between primarily visual artists and primarily sound artists are encouraged but not required.

Some ideas for potential material:

• Zoetrope records

• Photobooth that records snapshots of sound instead of image

• Kaleidoscope-record hybrid
• Re-engineering of outdated technology such as flexi discs and lathe cut records/surfaces
• Early techniques for mapping sound visually such as Chlandi plates or phonoautographs
• An audible "drawing" that uses audio tape taken out of the cassette as a line, etc.

Curators Brianna Toth and Olivia Solis will propose Ways of Hearing to spaces in San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles in early spring of 2009.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, February 27th, 2009 (All submissions must be postmarked by this date)
