Am currently taking a class on Final Cut Pro X for which I decided to "use" some of my own material with which to go through learning that application (very different from previous versions of Final Cut Pro with which I am very familiar).

As I recently recorded a concert presented in Belgium by my goddess of the harpsichord, Paola Erdas, I selected her "encore" (a "bis" in French) with which to explore Final Cut Pro X.

As is so often the case, accidents provide what is to me, the best "I" can do, and I was pleasantly surprised by what came out of yesterday's training session.

I will for sure revisit this gorgeous music, but wanted to share those "accidents" here.

Paola and I have done several pieces together, am eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to do so "live," presenting concerts during which she will play while I'll improvise the images in real-time.

"Pee Wee's Psychedelic Adventure"

Through the magical combination of music, cameraless animation, and a digital transfer of scratched, painted, dyed, and drawn on, 35mm film stock, Pee Wee Herman & Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) are transported beyond the fourth wall on a psychedelic adventure at Pee Wee's Playhouse. This is an experimental art film that laughs at itself while exploring alternative realities on multiple levels. The source material 35mm roll of film was one I had left over from my days as an animation DP (Director of Photography) in the 80's and 90's. All the art-on-film animation was created by myself and five students (Shannon Brice, Alleanna Harris, Ben Howell, Bianca Lott, & Austin Myers) from my 2013 Object Animation class at U-Arts in Philadelphia.
The film to digital transfer was done at Technicolor, Postworks in NYC.
The music is a live performance of the song "4 to 6 or 25" written and performed by Anonymous

Amor de mel, amor de fel

In 2001, I discovered Misia ("Ritual" http://www.misia-online.com/).
I since have bought all her records.

A few months later, another (gentle) tsunami entered my life, Christina Pluhar and her magnificent "L'Arpeggiata" ("La Tarantella: Antidotum Tarantulae" http://www.arpeggiata.com/).
I also have all the records from that essential ensemble.

I should have guessed those two would eventually get together, they both have a deep grounding in tradition and a need to explore.
They both at times have been under attack from the ayatollahs of the musically correct, be it of baroque music or fado, but (thankfully) "the dogs bark and the caravan moves on...".

It's done now, they came together on a beautiful CD ("Mediterraneo" http://www.arpeggiata.com/archives/portfolio/mediterraneo).

This sketch is yet another attempt at listening to music with my eyes, avoiding as much as I can the facile "solution" to "animate" by way of (what I call) "cartooning."

As a painter, I have long seen the fallacy of figure - ground differentiation, at least the linear "fixed" kind.
Perception (which drives all, as Merleau-Ponty said, it is "constitutive") for me is made of constant reversals: figure becomes ground, ground becomes figure, and if there is a point of balance between those two poles, it is not available to the discursive mind, but may leave traces (of its existence) in our work if we can proceed without being constantly dominated by the conceptual (another facile "solution").
Those traces are found in/created by the work we do "without knowing" (so many artists have acknowledged that as being the source of their best work).

So, to paraphrase Fernando Pessoa / Alberto Caeiro, "I don't know what I am doing, and I don't want to know."
