We were very pleased to take part to the TROUBLE TUNE event that happened at the Royal Festival Hall in London in november 2009.

TROUBLE TUNE is a groundbreaking music event putting on the same stage dubstep artists and jazz musicians.

We were pleased to be amongst the visual artists of the TILT COLLECTIVE which was handling the visual art side of the event.

We were very pleased to use the giant screen to show our PIANO PHASE remix, which is a cult music piece made by Steve Reich, the master of repetitive music, in 1967.

This is the first time we're using a projection screen with our Photophonics system, and there will be more to come!

PHOTOPHONICS 02 - TILT exhibition at Bash Creations Gallery - London, october 2009

Photophonics is the result of the collaboration between Mike Blow and I.

This version of Photophonics is exploring the infinite potential of the visuals aspects of repetitive music.

The inspiration for this sequence is Steve Reich's "Drumming part4". Although the sounds being used are not percussion sounds like in Reich's piece, but more 6o's synthetisers type of sounds.

In repetitive music the arrangements of repetitive loops, building up progressively to an ecstatic dimension, have a very clear geometrical identity. In some ways, you can almost see this geometry just by listening to the music itself. Building a system that plays both sounds and visuals to play repetitive music gives a spatial identity to an "already spatial" music...with your eyes open!

When you watch the video, we suggest that you watch it from beginning to end. Don't fast forward, as like repetitive music, you need to experience the building-up to fully appreciate the sequence.

Piano-Phase (Steve Reich, 1967) Visualization

This is the visualization of the most known passage of "Piano Phase", iconic piece of repetitive music made by Steve reich in 1967.

Steve reich used loops of the same piano phrase played simultaneously by 2 tape players. After a short while, because the speed is not exactly the same on both players, they start to go out of synch, little by little. This phasing "accident" gave birth to amazing auditory illusions, as our brain keeps anticipating the next loops, but because they're not always the same as the 2 phrases go out of synch, an amazing phenomenon happens and unexpected sounds occur, some of them being a product of your brain!

Here, by visualizing each of the notes, we wanted to see how a "visual" phasing works, and are pretty keen of the result.
