"Pee Wee's Psychedelic Adventure"

Through the magical combination of music, cameraless animation, and a digital transfer of scratched, painted, dyed, and drawn on, 35mm film stock, Pee Wee Herman & Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) are transported beyond the fourth wall on a psychedelic adventure at Pee Wee's Playhouse. This is an experimental art film that laughs at itself while exploring alternative realities on multiple levels. The source material 35mm roll of film was one I had left over from my days as an animation DP (Director of Photography) in the 80's and 90's. All the art-on-film animation was created by myself and five students (Shannon Brice, Alleanna Harris, Ben Howell, Bianca Lott, & Austin Myers) from my 2013 Object Animation class at U-Arts in Philadelphia.
The film to digital transfer was done at Technicolor, Postworks in NYC.
The music is a live performance of the song "4 to 6 or 25" written and performed by Anonymous

"Jukie's Ball" Dan Hicks (U-Arts Animation)

This is a rotoscoped animation created as a group project by my "Animation ll" class at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia of 2008. The students created the artwork from a 16mm film print loaded in the school's Oxberry animation stand camera, which I set up as a single frame projection system. The film we used was a music video originally created through my father's company "Record on Film" for the band Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks in 1968 for a song titled "Jukie's Ball". I encouraged the students to explore their imaginations with a diverse range of techniques and drawing styles. The finished drawings were then captured using istopmotion software, and reintegrated with the original audio from the music video. The edit and titles were by me and student David Guerrieri.

"Electric Boogie Mud" (Pratt Experimental)

Direct on 35mm film hand made cameraless animation from my Fall 2011 Pratt, Experimental Animation class. Drawing, painting, scratching, and generally abusing celluloid that was then transferred professionally on a Spirit at Technicolor in NYC as a class group project that was then edited by myself and Jessica Vanslooten with music/sound design by Adam Jungerheld. The transfer colorist at Technicolor was Jim Mann. The main title was designed and animated by Anastasia Serdukova.

"Summertime" (U-Arts Animation)

This rotoscoped animation created in my 2012 U-Arts Animation ll class was derived from a music video for the group Mungo Jerry of their #1 hit song "In the Summertime". The live action was shot in 1970 by my father's company Record on Film. I used the 16mm film print of the video to load into an Oxberry animation stand camera for the students in the class to rotoscope from. I encouraged them to capture the essence of each frame as quickly as possible and concentrate on filling in as much as possible with their imaginations. Some of the students then brought their scanned drawings into Flash or After Effects in order to add the finishing touches, the rest were captured via istopmotion software.

A Cameraless, direct on 16mm film, animation created in my fall 2010 Experimental Animation class at Pratt Institute. This film was posted last year, but was an almost complete version that did not yet include any titles or credits, here is the final version. Edited by Brianne Vanputte. The sound design by Colin Kelly is kind of an homage to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue".
