The Visual Music Village

for Visual Music Artists, Writers, and Venues

"12 x 30, Blind, Unfolded” is the second “plate" of a diptych, the first one being “12 x 30, Blind” (https://vimeo.com/96360994).
Both movies are done in collaboration with composer Donald Meyer (see all of our work here: https://vimeo.com/album/2985607).
“12 x 30, Blind” was started by my creating a 6-minute silent movie which I divided in twelve 30-second segments, sending them one-at-a-time to Don, in chronological order.
Don was “allowed" to compose music in anticipation of the images he had not yet seen, but he was “forbidden” to go back and “fix” things after the fact.
It was fascinating to see how much his music for images he had not yet seen matched the needs of those images, time and time again, the validity of Philip Guston’s “inherent composition” was once again revealed (though I have renamed that “inherent animation” given this work is taking place in the time dimension).
This approach not only yielded the first movie, it also ended up creating an “excess” of about 6 minutes of music which had no accompanying images.
“12 x 30, Blind, Unfolded” was done by my creating those images, reversing the roles, it was my turn to work from/for existing material (the music) while Don had to work from/for existing visuals during the composing of the music for “12 x 30, Blind.”
A word of caution: this is one of my movies which is hurt the most by the conversions movies undergo in order to be posted on the web: from 1080p HD to 720p, from Apple ProRes 4444 (15 GB) to h.264 (1.9 GB), further reduced to a mere 122 MB by Vimeo, much is lost in the process…

Thank you
