"Photography" is a broad term and "photographers" seem reluctant to lose its link to the camera. However, when you look into the field of collage you'll see that people have already gone beyond camera-based to scanner-based photography (see www.nadineboughton.com, and others). The next step, I think, will be that photographers are going to realize that animations, or "video", is another potential source of photography, -- see Jean Detheux's, Dennis Miller's, and my own work. It's just that the concept of video-based photography hasn't been accepted yet. This third category is almost circular since it includes the other two: you can use camera- or scanner-based images to make a video, which I have done, and lastly, you can start your new animation from a video-based piece of photography. So there, here the circle closes.

I wonder now what the defenders of old-fashioned "photography" will say? Will they choose to call the new work "unconventional photography"? I think they are too focused (fixated) on results; they should look at the process by which photography is made. Once you do, to accept the term "video-based photography" is not going to be a problem. No more landscapes and human nudes, however.

Video-based photography?

As a visual music artist making animations as well as printable/frameable stills, I am beginning to distinguish between camera-, scanner-, and video-based photography. This third genre potential comprises the former two since you can begin an animation with a camera- and/or scanner-based image. My focus is on the third category. I would like to show that there is aesthetic photography potential in animation stills.

While I welcome the "liberation of the image from the frame" in visual…

hello, everybody. My composer colleague Dennis Miller last year opened up to me the resources of visual music, initially through his own work which blew me away, evolution of sound in time having been one of my highest priorities since 1973. I just put all of my sounding music written since 1966 on 12 CDs (with much unperformed instrumental-vocal music left) and decided it was time to enrich my future electronic music by way of digital painting. I did some watercolor and oil paint work initially and will return to that. But for me as a composer having worked with computer since 1970 (writing machine language code then), the draw to recording "paint actions" (with music of my own), to speak in terms of Studio Artist, is irresistable. I initially worked briefly with Cinema 4D to find out whether I am more interested in 3D or 2D; I am really interested in going back and forth between them. I then came upon Studio Artist which I am now exploring. The SA community has been very helpful to me as a beginner already.
So thank you for opening up this additional community for me.
(My website, www.ottolaske.com, is still in progress and will point to my poetry, music, and scientific work in cognitive musicology and developmental psychology).
